eSIM Glossary

eSIM (embedded SIM)
A small chip soldered inside your phone that works like a traditional plastic SIM card. Instead of inserting a physical card, you download a carrier profile (via QR code) to connect to a mobile network. All hoppaSIM plans are eSIM‑only: no plastic, no waiting.
QR Code (eSIM installation)
The square barcode you scan with your phone camera to download your hoppaSIM eSIM profile. It contains the address of the eSIM server (SM‑DP+) and your unique activation code. You receive it by email and in My Account → Orders.
Data Roaming
Allows your phone to connect to mobile networks outside your home country. With hoppaSIM eSIMs you must enable data roaming in your phone settings – otherwise you’ll have no internet. No surprise fees; your plan already covers roaming at your destination.
APN (Access Point Name)
The gateway between your phone and the mobile network. Most hoppaSIM eSIMs configure the APN automatically. On rare occasions you may need to enter it manually – the exact details are shown in your order confirmation.
Unlocked Phone
A phone that is not tied to a single carrier and can accept eSIM profiles from any provider (like hoppaSIM). If your phone is locked to a specific carrier, you’ll need to contact them to unlock it before using our eSIMs.
Regional / Multi‑country Plan
One eSIM that works in a group of countries (e.g. “Europe”, “Asia”). Install once – it connects automatically when you move between countries in that region. Ideal for multi‑destination trips.
Top‑up / Add‑on
Some hoppaSIM plans allow you to add more data while your plan is still active. Top‑ups extend your data allowance but usually do not extend the validity period. Availability depends on the destination.
Carrier Profile
The software package (eSIM profile) that contains your mobile number, authentication keys, and network settings. When you scan a hoppaSIM QR code, you download and install this profile onto your device.
Activation
The moment your eSIM connects to a mobile network. With hoppaSIM, activation happens automatically when you install the profile (on Wi‑Fi) and arrive at your destination with data roaming turned on. No button to press.
Hotspot / Tethering
Share your phone’s mobile data connection with other devices (laptop, tablet). Most hoppaSIM eSIMs support tethering – turn on “Personal Hotspot” in your settings. If the option is greyed out, your plan may not include hotspot.
Validity Period
The number of days your eSIM plan remains active from the moment you first connect to the network (or from a fixed start date). After expiry, the plan stops working even if data remains.
Coverage
The countries (or regions) your hoppaSIM plan works in, and the mobile networks it uses. Coverage maps are on each product page. All plans use premium local partners for the best signal.
eSIM Profile
The digital equivalent of a plastic SIM card – contains your subscription details. You can store multiple profiles on one device, but only one can be active for data at a time.
SM‑DP+
The technical platform that securely delivers your eSIM profile to your phone. When you scan a hoppaSIM QR code, your phone contacts the SM‑DP+ server to download the profile. Everything happens automatically.
